Some Basic Directory Submission Guidelines
It is a fact that you can add your website URL to an online directory for free. With a directory submission, you can greatly improve the online visibility of your website, and in the process, receive more visitors and customers to your website. However while making submissions, remember that each directory has its own guidelines it follows to approve sites. It is important that you follow these guidelines to ensure a better chance of your submission getting approved.
Most directories permit using keywords in its title and some only permit using the company or website name as the title. In case keywords are accepted, the title created should be relevant to the site and should carry a meaning. The title usually has to be within 20 – 50 characters long. It is better to avoid repetition of keywords, using words like 'best' and 'leader', upper case letters and any exclamation mark in the tile. Some directories require a description of the site on submission, which generally follow the guidelines set for writing the title. In addition to this, the description should not have any pricing or promotional details that may change with time. Most directories also prefer not adding any phone number or address details in the description and ending the description with 'etc' and 'and others'.
While directories are generally not strict about keywords, don't repeat any keyword more than once. Go through the directory guidelines to ensure keywords are entered following format like perhaps having keywords separated by a space or a comma. While submitting to the directory, don't hurry in choosing your category. Take time to go through all the available options. Sometimes, if there is no suitable category for submission, some directories let you make suggestions for a relevant category. If the editor finds the category suitable, they will submit your site in the newly created category you had suggested.
Basically, directories are not particular about your site URL or domain. However make sure you submit it in the right format, which may be a URL with or without 'http: //'. Do not however submit domains that redirect to other sites or parked domains and domains without content. Generally, you have to submit only your home page and not a URL pointing to any of your inner web pages. As most directories don't accept domains hosted on free hosting services or unregistered domains, don't submit these types of domains. For better online visibility, include the email address of your site domain while making directory submissions.
Regarding site content, directories have guidelines about the type of sites they accept. In addition to this, the site you submit should be fully operational, and not under construction. Avoid submitting sites without content or only one web page. While your site should have substantial content, it should not be filled with affiliate links or ads, or mirror content which means the same content in sites of different domains.
It is important you follow these and the directory guidelines before making directory submissions. Remember that the directory editor receives lots of submissions in a day, and all it takes is a single reason for the editor to reject your site. If you feel you are ready, submit your site today.
